Ultra-Productive Internal Machining with MTNN — Grooving Tools
A large Vietnamese screw machine manufacturer producing hydraulic components in SUS316F stainless steel in high volumes needed to machine two tight internal grooves in a small bore.
Issues encountered
- Unstable process with the grooving tool previously used
- Insufficient dimensional accuracy and inconsistent repeatability from batch to batch
- Surface finish Ra 0.8 difficult to maintain consistently in continuous production
- Frequent stoppages for re-setting after each tool change
Consequences
- Tool life limited to ~12,000 grooves per tool

- Swiss-MicroTurn grooving insert MTNN 42006-R-TiAlN (width 0.60 mm) with vibration-damping tool holder
- Integrated QuickChange system: immediate restart of production after tool change, with no re-setting required
- Optimised machining strategy: plunge to Ø 2.70 mm + axial feed of 0.05 mm to reach the groove width of 0.65 mm
- Deployed on 4 production machines after validation on a test machine
