Kitagawa BR05 chuck for demanding machining applications in the medical industry

With the BR05, Kitagawa expands the BR Series with a compact power chuck developed for high-speed operation, stable clamping, and precision machining. According to the presentation, the BR05 offers 36.0 kN maximum static gripping force, 8,000 min⁻¹ maximum rotational speed, higher dynamic gripping force at maximum speed than the B‑205, and approximately 35% higher rigidity. At the same time, the outer diameter, body thickness, through-hole, and mounting dimensions remain compatible with the B‑205, making replacement straightforward.

The showcased application focuses on machining a liner, which is one of the components used in an artificial hip joint. The workpiece material is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), chosen for its low coefficient of friction, durability, and suitability for artificial bone applications. However, this same slippery surface also makes secure chucking more challenging.

To address this, the chucking concept was tailored specifically to the workpiece: the gripping surface was formed to match a 5.1° angle, the jaws were designed wide and without a centre cutout, increasing the contact area and helping to reduce surface pressure. The demonstration also assumes a gripping force of 2–5 kN or less, with the aim of reducing the risk of damage to the part. The linked video further describes the custom-designed chuck as being engineered to minimise workpiece damage and distortion.

Another important advantage of the demonstrated concept is the use of a parent-and-sub-jaw design rather than a one-piece jaw. This allows only the sub-jaws to be remade or adjusted if the taper angle needs correction, improving flexibility and process reliability. That makes the concept particularly attractive for medical components with tight tolerances and sensitive surfaces.

At Lestoprex, we see the Kitagawa BR05 as a compelling workholding solution for manufacturers in the medical industry who require precision, process stability, and gentle clamping of sensitive components. We would be pleased to advise you on this application and on suitable chucking concepts for your production.
