Cut a crossed knurl?

How to achieve beautiful crossed knurls in plastics, (leaded) brass or free-cutting steels?

These materials tend to form flakes or scales during deformation knurling, which may result in insufficient surface quality. The elasticity of the material may also simply prevent the use of such a process, for example with plastics.

A double milling knurl holder then becomes the only alternative to a much slower and more complex cutting operation.
